Both work well on the M5. Yes the 40mm being smaller size blends well. However in real like the 1.8 of 50mm makes it the lens I carry with me. Agree with you that 40mm 2.8 may not give you that much of an advantage aperture wise. I understand 40mm may appear sharper to some photographers.

As you have the crop camera, you're really looking at: 24mm is a 38mm 40 2.8 is a 64mm 4.5 50 1.8 is an 80mm 2.7 (Approx) So the 24 will be more like a 40 on a full frame - this may not be wide enough for landscape shooting on vacation.
